SelfLedger · The method
The method.
One trait a week. A mark when you lapse. Two minutes at night. A line that falls. This page is the whole system, and the thirteen traits it runs on, cited to the book they come from.
One trait, one week
The year divides into four seasons of thirteen weeks. Each week carries a single trait. For seven days you watch for that one trait and let the other twelve rest. Watching one thing is possible. Watching everything is how resolutions die.
The order of the thirteen is yours — a short calibration on the first day sets it, and the seasons repeat it. By the fourth season the week does not feel like effort. It feels like attention.
The mark
When you slip, you mark it. A mark is a timestamp, not a confession — the trait and the time, nothing else. Two taps, in the moment, and back to your day. There is no rating, no mood, no essay. The point of a mark is that it is cheap to make and impossible to argue with.
The evening
After eight, the review opens. You take two minutes with the day: read the marks, give a note to the one that deserves it, and seal. A sealed day is read-only — it does not reopen, for anyone. The ledger keeps history the way paper does: written once.
The line
Marks are counted by the week. Across a season, the line falls. It does not need to reach zero. It needs to be honest, and to point down. The chart is the only reward the app offers, and it is enough, because it is true.
The thirteen
Each trait opens with the sentence Lefin wrote at the head of its chapter, newly translated from the Hebrew for SelfLedger. The bracketed numbers cite the section numbering of the original, so you can check us against the book.

The book
The traits, the week, the seal, and the falling chart are all from Cheshbon Ha-Nefesh, published by Menachem Mendel Lefin in 1808. SelfLedger adds nothing to the method. It only makes the bookkeeping cheap enough to keep.
